Looking for the epitome of style at the movies? Look no further than Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief".

Are you looking for an effortly sylish French Riviera thriller from the best director in the business? Then you need to look back to Hitchcock’s 1955 To Catch a Thief.

Some critics say that the movie lacks substance, but what it lacks in substance it definitely makes up for with style. Following on from his more serious works Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, this languid picture showcases it’s two main stars, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, as well as the picturesque location – the Côte d’Azur in France.

Cary Grant plays John “The Cat” Robie, a retired jewel thief who attempts to clear his name after a copycat starts stealing from wealthy Riviera tourists. In his search he meets wealthy widow Jessie Stevens, and her beautiful daughter Frances. The insurance adjuster for the Stevens agrees to help Robie catch the thief. What follows is a lush, lazy trip through a relatively transparent plot, but with the benefit of seeing Grace Kelly in her natural habitat – dressing like a princess in spectacular surroundings. Cary Grant does his bit too – and all in all it is a gorgeous romantic thriller with the touch of the master to mark it out – escapism at its best.

How often is it that a remake of a stylish movie is even more stylish than the original? That is certainly the case with the Thomas Crown Affair.

How often is it that a remake of a stylish movie is even more stylish than the original? That is certainly the case with the Thomas Crown Affair.

We can say without reservation that we are big fans of Steve McQueen, especially in his role in the original movie, but the casting in the remake is genius – Pierce Brosnan as the bored millionaire playboy and elegant art thief, and Rene Russo as the insurance investigator who is all smouldering sexuality and style. Directed by John McTiernan (of Die Hard fame), this is one smart and sophisticated movie.

The backdrops are sumptuous, the cat and mouse plot is clever (leaving the audience guessing until the end), and the soundtrack provides some unconventional pieces which only contribute to the overall feel. As a study in style it is a success, and although it could be accused of lacking substance, it is definitely worth watching more than once, even if it is just to admire Russo lighting up the screen.

The early 1960's were stylish. The clothes were stylish, the cars were stylish - and the TV show epitomising that style is AMC's Mad Men. Hell, even the opening credits are cool.

The early 1960′s were stylish. The clothes were stylish, the cars were stylish – and the TV show epitomising that style is AMC’s Mad Men. Hell, even the opening credits are cool.

Mad Men tells the story of 1960′s advertising executives on Madison Avenue (hence the “Mad”) in New York. The lead character, Don Draper, is a cool, slick talker who has a way with the women. His wife, Betty Draper, is a Grace Kelly lookalike. The entire cast dresses well, the plot is excellent, and even the lighting is stylish.

Mad Men also illustrates society in the early 1960′s – from the constant cigarette smoking to the whole changing social structure and male/female dynamics.

Mad Men is possibly one of the best shows on television, with the awards to match. And it’s combination of plot and style earns it our Recommended Seal of Approval. If you haven’t seen it, go and rent Season One on DVD now.

In the first of a number of posts detailing style in the movies, we start with a classic from 1960 - the original Ocean's 11.

In the first of a number of posts detailing style in the movies, we start with a classic from 1960 – the original Ocean’s 11. Yes, it has been remade (some would say even more stylishly), but there is still a place in our hearts for the original.

In terms of plot, it wasn’t particularly complex (but it did have a twist at the end). But the four key cast members – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford (aka the “Rat Pack”) – were the epitome of cool in 1960. Lawford is at his sophisticated best, Sinatra (one of the biggest stars of the day) is self assured, Dean Martin is laid back, and Sammy sings a great song “EE-O-ELEVEN”. None of them need to try too hard, but that’s because they don’t have to. They remain stylish, suave and gentlemanly, even as they give everyone from builders to Aviva (http://www.aviva.co.uk/) CEOs a heart attack when they accidentally “lose” the money (as not to give away the fantastic twist).

It’s not the best movie of all time, it’s not even the best heist movie of all time – the key to this movie is the fact that it captures everything that was considered cool at the onset of the 1960′s – and in that respect it’s worth watching.

There are only a few very classy and stylish TV shows on right now. The one which immediately springs to mind is set in Miami (and no, we are not talking about CSI Miami).

Burn Notice on the USA network exudes style. The male lead, Michael Westen, dresses with a cool panache not seen since Miami Vice. His female sidekick, Fiona (played by Gabrielle Anwar), is a drop-dead gorgeous ex-IRA operative who always looks great regardless of outfit. The camera work is also well done. The only thing which really lets it down are Sam’s shirts.
